Reflecting on International Women’s Day, our Placement Student from the University of Reading, Mel, has reflected on her experiences as a young woman, being able to support girls within the local community.

When I think about the importance of volunteering to support young girls, I’m reminded of how valuable it is to have someone who truly understands your experiences. As women, we’ve all faced challenges—whether it’s self-doubt, societal pressures, or simply navigating the complexities of growing up. Having a strong female role model can make all the difference in helping a young girl feel seen, heard, and empowered to chase her dreams.

For me, the pull toward volunteering comes from a deep belief in the power of mentorship. I know how much it means to have someone who’s been in your shoes, offering guidance, encouragement, and a reminder that you are capable of achieving great things. Female role models provide a sense of reassurance—they show young girls that success is possible, confidence is attainable, and their voices matter.

I was lucky enough to have inspiring women in my life who shaped the person I am today. Whether it was a teacher, a mentor, or a family member, these women led by example, proving that strength comes in many forms. Now, I want to do the same for others. Supporting young girls through mentorship or volunteering isn’t just about giving advice—it’s about being present, listening, and reminding them that they are enough.

Every girl deserves to see a version of herself in the women she looks up to. By stepping up as role models, we’re helping build a future where more young women feel empowered to pursue their goals with confidence. That’s a future worth striving for.
